Day 3 weight removal

After two days we have come to realize what of what we packed is useful and what is just dead weight. Between the two of us we packed 12 pounds worth stuff into a box and shipped it home. I gave up my camera because I’m finding the iPhone camera more than adequate plus the benefit of emailing photos right away, plus there’s really nothing that wants for a better camera (when you see the Bigfoot picture you’ll know what I mean). There’s no cell service but we hit wifi every once in awhile.

Day 3 Orleans to Happy Camp

Leaving the Klamath River Lodge we traveled up river past Orleans and on through beautiful country with very few cars. Every once in awhile there would be a ranch on the river but otherwise it was empty of people. Weather was sunny and cool, perfect biking weather.

Day 2 Klamath River Lodge

It’s hard to get a sense of how beautiful this place is. It’s an old estate built at the turn of the century run by a couple of caretakers. We’re the only ones here tonight. There’s a huge lawn and an old house with 4-5 garages below and several cabins (we’re in the smaller one which is very nice sized) and a swimming pool and deck with BBQ and skeet shooting over the lawn. A perfect place to come if you’re a fisherman or even for a family vacation.

Day 2 Klamath River Lodge

Got to Weitchpec about 2:00 and just over 50 miles. Weithpec is on the Hoopa reservation and there’s nothing there to write home about. We stopped to eat lunch as it started to rain and we had about 12 more miles to Klamath River Lodge where we’d made reservations for the night. The last couple of miles had been a slog so I turned to Chris and said I’ll bet a couple of twenties would get us to the Lodge a lot faster than riding. I went in to the store eating a cookie and the lady running it said “you eat that in here you gonna have to share”. I laughed and offered her a piece but she declined with a twinkle in her eye then offered me a chicken wing. I asked if she knew anyone who might drive us to Orleans and she said she might. 5 minutes later Ted showed up with an old pickup truck and a mouth full of marbles ( everything he said we had to ask two or three times to repeat). It was raining hard up the grade and we were glad we’d taken the ride. I’m just sorry I don’t have a picture of the store or Ted.

Day 2 scenery

Confluence of many rivers.

(I sure wish it was possible to add more than one photo to an email.)

Day 2 Big Foot

Down town Willow Creek. Auto parts, bank, Subway and gas station. Tourism and logging, that’s about all there is up here. Guy running the RV park at Del Loma claimed Big Foot had been seen during the fire last year. Uh huh.
